Back on the West Coast

SURF:
1-3 ft ankle to waist high and poor-fair conditions.

This morning’s dawn patrol: Clean, peaky lines with a few mushy, but workable little corners through the inside. Occasional little plus peaks.

Back on the West coast after 2 weeks back home. Waves at Pacifica were okay, got in a few nice long fun rides and did a lot of paddling. I’m totally exhausted, not sure how that happened but it’s good to be back.

Back in Pacifica

Jamie

Conditions: 1-3ft. Glassy, peaky lines with soft/mushy corners looking semi-workable to the beach.

The mellow little waves followed me home!

Sure it looked pretty flat out there, but I got in some nice long rides on little waves. Jamie and I found a nice spot that, with a LOT of patience, set us up for a few 2-3 ft waves with both lefts and rights. High tide and an unwillingness to let go of the wave meant most of the rides ended abruptly at the beach. Jamie got a few rolling dismounts into the sand. I didn’t get anything that graceful.

El Niño has been forcing Anchovies and Sea Lions up north making the bay area waters extremely active. We had dive bombing pelicans and probably about a dozen or so sea lions around us. It’s a little spooky! Unfriendly fin sightings have been up in Ocean Beach and with Shark Week on the Discovery Channel, everyone’s a bit jumpy.

I snapped this pic of a sea lion near my board:

MRAAAaaaaah

Not very friendly looking…

Good rides!

Great Day!

SURF: 1-3 ft ankle to waist high and poor+ conditions.

This morning’s dawn patrol: Weak, scattered peaks, with soft, semi-workable little corners on offer.

Wow. Today was a small, clean little day. It looked pretty unassuming from the beach, but man did I have fun. The waves were pretty easy to catch and gave some long mellow rides.

I caught two good waves for my first clean rides on the new board. I got a nice long right and another wave that gave me a few good turns including a left turn. That’s actually the first time I’ve ever turned left. I also made a few clean exits from the wave instead of just falling. Marked improvement is a big win for the confidence.

More practice

Pacifica

SURF:
2-3 ft.+ knee to chest high and fair conditions.

This morning’s dawn patrol: Glassy, with peaky lines rolling through. Corners are a little soft, but workable

Right back out there for another day in the surf. I got some sloppy rides in, but I am starting to catch more waves with the new board. That’s definitely an improvement. 😀

Sea lions!

Dawn Patrol at Pacifica

SURF:
2-3 ft.+ knee to chest high with occasional 4 ft. and fair conditions.

This morning’s dawn patrol: Mostly walled up lines with inside shoulders that are open and workable, but a little soft and crumbly. Clean conditions.

Headed out early for another dawn patrol. Short swell period made a tough paddle out. Weather was beautiful. I got spooked pretty good by a tricky sea lion who decided to catch the same wave I did.

Nothing like seeing a 4ft long black shadow coming at you in a wave :p
I wussed out and sat on the beach for a good 20 minutes trying to get the nerve back up to charge out in the waves. Still didn’t really get any rides, but a nice day to be out.

Small waves, slow surf, more practice

SURF:
1-2 ft ankle to knee high with occasional 3 ft. and poor-fair conditions.

This morning’s dawn patrol: Mostly peaky lines with soft/weak shoulders that are workable (mainly for a bigger board). Clean.

Friday’s surf was so mellow it was near impossible to get a wave. I’m happy to have more time in with the new board, happy to practice paddling on it, but it would have been nice to get one wave 😉

Happy 4th!

Dawn Patrol with the New Board!

Washing the boards off after a great morning out!

Conditions:
2-3 ft.+ knee to chest high and fair – conditions.

This morning’s dawn patrol: Mostly peaky lines with soft/crumbly shoulders that are workable (mainly for a bigger board). Slight texture to the surface.

First day out on my 9’4″ Stewart Hydro Hull!

Took the new board out today! We did an early morning surf session. Got down to to beach around 6:45 and surfed till 9. Conditions were great, slow, clean, some bigger waves. Dolphins, whales, and sea lions were all hanging out in the cove, checking us surfers out.

The new board is wonderful. It paddles really fast. I caught a few waves, got one almost clean ride in. It will take some getting used to, but I’m so excited to have a board! <3

Adventures up the Coast, Hometown surfing

Surf Report:
3-4 ft. waist to chest high with occasional 5 ft. and poor-fair conditions.
This morning’s dawn patrol: It’s glassy, but looking mostly closed out again this morning, with a few makeable corners here and there.

Pacifica’s been flat and I’ve been traveling around Cali quite a bit lately (Tahoe! The Coast!) so I haven’t had many opportunities to surf. Today was a great, sunny day to be out. I’m a little out of practice so no clean rides for me. Instead lots of falling and goofing off with my friends in the lineup. Vi and I had a seaweed fight.

My pictures from the coast are much more exciting, so feel free to check those out instead.

Finally used the rack!

Rack + Vi's Board

Surf Report:
None. Flat as can be.

FCS Single Soft Rack

Set out today to grab a few morning waves, test out Veronica’s new board and test out my rack. Got all the rack testing in, but the waves were non-existent.

Bailed on the flat tiny waves for bloody mary’s at the Half Moon Bay Brewing Company.

The rack did well. It’s easy to put on, easy to secure the boards, and requires no permanent attachment. Holds 2-3 boards and has neoprene around the buckles to prevent the board or your car from getting scratched. Great value for the $$.

Happy Memorial Day

Surf Report:
3-4 ft. + waist to shoulder high and poor conditions.
This morning’s dawn patrol: Mainly sectiony, sloppy surf with some surface texture/light chop to it.

Gear: 9’0″ Stewart LSP

I celebrated a chilly Memorial day with some good waves. Surfline’s report had made the conditions sound less than rideable but once at the beach it was a pretty clean day. Offshore winds, good sets with a nice lull between for resting, clean waves and the occasional barrel.

I tried out a friend’s Stewart LSP. It was definitely different than the foam boards I’ve been riding. Light and easy to paddle. The only tough part was it had track pads so the waves I did manage to get I wound up kicking the board out from under me. Too much grip. The board itself tho, very nice. Light, fast, and easy to ride.

Here’s what Stewart had to say about the board:

Lightweight, Speed, Performance. This is what Jeff Kramer asked for in a longboard model. A full rocker speed shape, the LSP provides shortboard capabilities to a longer board. Designed by Bill Stewart and Jeff for more aggressive surfing in faster and steeper waves. We like to call it out 9’0″ shortboard.

I definitely agree.

After surfing we hit up Gorilla BBQ on Route 1.
GREAT pulled pork and a great vibe. Nothing says Memorial Day Surf sesh like eating BBQ in a parking lot by the beach.

Happy Memorial Day.
