Chilly bodysurf sesh

2016-LM-05-31

Surf: 4.3 ft at 17.4 s from the SSW at 195°. Outgoing.

The surf was small and basically shorebreak today. I decided to bodysurf rather than go risk my fin in the shallows. Wouldn’t you know it, the day people in the lot are giving me shit about the holes in my wetsuit is also the day the water is FREEEEEZING cold? I said nah, it’s fine, I can hold out till November and get another suit in the fall. Then, about chest deep in the water I though, hmm, maybe this suit is a little too chilly for comfort.

I got a comple fun waves. Sure enough, it looked better as I was about to leave. By then I was too frozen to grab the board and catch a few more.

Bodysurf

Surf: 5.9 ft at 16.0 s from the W at 272°. Low, incoming.

My shoulder was hurting and the surf was closed out. Perfect for bodysurfing!

Saw a few familiar faces in the water, went over the falls backwards, and got lots of long rides. Fun stuff.

Short Surf and Swim

2015-LM-08-23

Surf: 3.6 ft at 9.1 s from the NW at 318°.

Hit the beach for a quick surf and swim with CG and the girls. The surf was a little rideable, so I caught a few waves while they played in the shallows. After a couple waves, I headed in to swim around with them, too. Managed to even get one on my surfboard to float around for a while! Not bad for a short session. 🙂

Salt Soak

2015-LM-08-17

Surf: 4.3 ft at 10.8 s from the WNW at 288°.

I snuck out from work early to head to the beach. Unfortunately the surf was closed out and pretty choppy, but I had been out of the ocean for far too long so I jumped in for a little bodysurfing. Nice to be salty again.

Fish Whomp

2015-LM-07-17

Surf: 4.3 ft at 9.1 s from the NW at 322°.

I didn’t have high hopes for this morning. That said, I got one good long wave, walked way up the nose. Everything else was a whomping closeout. After about an hour of that, I opted for some bodysurfing instead. That was pretty fun. There were so many fish. I’m not sure what kind. Something medium sized, larger than sardines and only in groups of 3-5 instead of big schools. They were silver with some bright yellow flashes.

We’ve been seeing a variety of different fish lately. The water’s very warm and lots of sea life is moving up the coast pursuing the colder water.

Sunny swim

2015-LM-05-31

Surf: 2.6 ft at 16.0 s from the WSW at 241°

My back was still really sore this morning, even after spending all day Saturday in bed. The waves were super small so I decided a little exercise might be in order. I headed out for a swim.

The upside was that swimming didn’t make it hurt any worse, but it didn’t improve the situation any either. Ahh well. Fresh air.

Mermaid swim day

2015-LM-05-24

Surf: 5.3 ft at 9.1 s from the NW at 311°. NW winds at 14kn.

I was hoping to get some outdoor time in this weekend. It’s been the coldest May on record so the beach wasn’t too crowded. The waves were on the meh side so Meghan, Chris, and the girls, and I went for an icy swim. Brrr.

Too high tide

2014-LM-11-09

Surf: 5.3 ft at 10.0 s from the W at 280°. High tide.

After the weeks’s success on a shorter board, I was both excited to get back out, but also hoping to take it a little easy. My shoulders were a bit sore and I didn’t want to push them too far. Sadly the surf did not cooperate. The tide was very high and the shorebreak was a sloshing mess. About halfway out I was feeling that sharp pain in my neck again so I turned around and bellied in.

It was disappointing, sure, but I did get some swim time in.

Terrible at Teaching

2014-BO-10-11

2014-PET-10-11

Surf: 4.9 ft at 14.8 s from the WSW at 258°. Incoming tide.

While I’m always supportive of anyone trying to learn to surf, I’m not the best surf teacher. My advice ranges from “paddle! keep paddling!” to “you ok? want to rest?” and not terribly much in between.

I took a few friends up to Bo. They’d both had lessons before and we’re interested in trying someplace with gentler waves. While happy not to be bashed by wave after wave, they weren’t super thrilled with the current into the lagoon. Now, this current has been a problem in past lessons, but never THIS much of a problem. There’s hardly any sand left on the lagoon side so the current was really whipping. One friend made it to shore relatively quickly but the other wasn’t making as much progress. In between yelling “paddle! keep paddling! paddle and then you can rest!” I also swam out to help get her back in.

After leaving them on the beach to test a slightly different spot (where I got a really fun wave on the rental cheese puff soft top) I decided maybe the patch would be better.

One friend was beat from the walk and the fight, but my other friend was able to get out and get some waves. With the exception of the shore break, things were pretty gentle. I’m not as comfortable swimming on this side, so I used the other board and yelled “paddle! more paddling!” behind her.

Next time I need a slightly better plan. Maybe we’ll go down to Cowells.

Post surf we went on a bit of a north bay adventure. Lunch at Lagunitas brewing and then a quick stop in the countryside. All around nice day.

Foggy Beach Day

2014-LM-10-05

Surf: 3.9 ft at 16.0 s from the S at 186°

It’s boiling hot in the city, so naturally it’s completely fogged over at the beach. I like the fog, but from the looks of the crowd down there, everyone was hoping for a sunny beach day.

I bodysurfed for a little while before eventually grabbing my board. I did get a couple long, fun waves that made it worth the traffic. Lots of swinging the board around to sneak just a little bit more out of every wave. Had a few right into the sand.
