End of July

2015-LM-07-30

Surf: 3.3 ft at 16.0 s from the SW at 229°.

Lots of whales today, lots of closeouts, too. Still, I wanted to get at least a paddle in before jetting off next week for a train trip in Canada with my Dad. Got a paddle in, a few waves, some sun, and some salt.

Tuesday

2015-LM-07-28

Surf: 4.6 ft at 17.4 s from the SW at 218°.

A little more size and a little more shape, today. Kind of wave like. Plenty of sun, fish, and whales!

Switchup

2015-LM-07-27

Surf: 3.6 ft at 7.7 s from the WNW at 292°.

The morning started out with pretty low expectations. Wind, lowish tide, etc. But, as the tide came in, it got to be a lot more rideable! That was nice. Usually it waits till after I’ve packed up to get better, nice to have it get better while I’m still out. 😉

Fish Whomp

2015-LM-07-17

Surf: 4.3 ft at 9.1 s from the NW at 322°.

I didn’t have high hopes for this morning. That said, I got one good long wave, walked way up the nose. Everything else was a whomping closeout. After about an hour of that, I opted for some bodysurfing instead. That was pretty fun. There were so many fish. I’m not sure what kind. Something medium sized, larger than sardines and only in groups of 3-5 instead of big schools. They were silver with some bright yellow flashes.

We’ve been seeing a variety of different fish lately. The water’s very warm and lots of sea life is moving up the coast pursuing the colder water.

Blue Greys

2015-LM-07-09

Surf: 3.3 ft at 16.0 s from the SW at 231°.

This morning was a little tricky. I checked a few of the spots I thought might catch this swell. Some of them were looking really interesting. Unfortunately I’m really sore and I didn’t feel up for it. Sigh. The surf was okay at the usual spot, but I find I’m torn between taking on more challenging waves that look so lovely, and sticking to easier waves while heal.

My plan is to keep trying to pull more complicated moves on the less complicated waves and just keep moving, slow and steady.

Russian River Swim

2015-LM-07-04

With the surf being flat and the weather being warm up north, we set out for a swim on the Russian River. I’ve never been up there, so I wasn’t sure what to expect. With the holiday, the first river beach parking lot was full. We found a little turn out along the road and a little path down. There was a great spot to sit on the bank and watch people float by. We had a nice little picnic, hit up Lagunitas Brewing, and zipped back home in time to ride bikes to watch fireworks on the bay. Lovely day!

Friday

2015-LM-07-03

Surf: 3.3 ft at 8.3 s from the NW at 319°.

Got up to check the waves even though it’s been slop the last week. Checked quite a few spots before settling on the usual. Kinda fun! Tide was a little low, but not terrible.

Still Slop

2015-LM-07-01

Surf: 4.3 ft at 8.3 s from the WNW at 302°

Today’s slop was a little less surfable. Not totally unsurfable, but certainly not better. Still, it’s good practice getting up early.
